General Information

ALL TIEDOWN AND LIFTING PRODUCTS ARE NOT THE SAME.

Anyone with a sewing machine can fabricate a web tie down or lifting sling. That doesn't mean that it's safe to use. You must be sure your equipment has been tested, properly rated, and correctly designed for the job. Stress, wear, stretch, and strength must be taken into consideration. You should go to a reputable manufacturer, and you must choose the right tiedown for the job.

CAPACITY IDENTIFICATION

  • All ® products are tagged with capacity rating when appropriate.
  • All Heavy Duty Tiedowns, Recovery Straps, and utility rated products have capacity rating tags sewn-on.
  • All Nylon and Polyester Lifting Slings are labeled with a sewn-on tag showing Vertical, Choker, and Basket Hitch Capacity.
  • All Twintex® and Stage Sling™ Roundslings are labeled and have SafetyStripes® to indicate the working load limits.

INSPECTION AND CARE OF SYNTHETIC WEB SLINGS AND TIEDOWNS

Prior to use, make certain that each sling or tiedown meets your requirements and has not been damaged in shipment.

While in use, make certain that your equipment is not damaged by:

  • Cutting - from sharp edges of the load or adjacent equipment
  • Snagging - usually caused by nails or protrusions
  • Excessive Wear - on eyes and body of sling or tiedown
  • Pinching or Crushing
  • Overloading
  • Heat Damage- Synthetic webbing must be limited to a maximum of 190° F temperature. Avoid damage by welding sparks and arcing.
  • Chemical Damage - such as acids which attack nylon and alkalis which degrade polyester.
  • Knots - Slings and tiedowns have a substantial reduction in strength when tied into knots.
  • Environmental Degradation - Ultraviolet rays, such as sunlight and arc welding degrade the strength of synthetic webbing.
  • Foreign Matter - Abrasives such as sand, grit, and metal chips will cut and abrade webbing internally and externally.

IMPORTANT

Slings and tiedowns should be inspected by the person handling them each time they are used. Frequent visual inspection is your best safeguard.
